THIS WEEK IN THE NEWS: August 18th, 2010

We're thrilled to announce that APE HOUSE has received starred reviews in both Booklist and Library Journal, and a nice review in Redbook: "Share it with the club. The author of the wildly bestselling Water for Elephants returns wtih a new novel, this time focusing on another odd population: a community of apes who can speak sign language--and who are on a reality TV show. Sounds like an out-there premise--and it is--but keep reading, becuse Gruen delivers a tale that's full of heart , hope, and compelling questions about who we really are."

Sara kicks off her nationwide 17-city tour at the Great Ape Trust in Des Moines, Iowa on September 8th.

Rights in APE HOUSE have now been sold in 18 countries, including: Mainland China, Taiwan, Spain, Italy, France, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Israel, Germany, Holland, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Slovenia.

Film rights in MAKING ROUNDS WITH OSCAR have recently been optioned to Wind Dancer Productions (producers of "What Women Want" and "Home Improvement") and Anonymous Content ("Being John Malkovich," "Portrait of a Lady, "Winter's Bone"). Way to go, Oscar!

And we're happy to announce two great new blurbs for Sara Gruen's APE HOUSE:

"I read Ape House in one joyous breath. Ever an advocate for animals, Gruen brings them to life with the passion of a novelist and the accuracy of a scientist. She has already done more for bonobos than I could do in a lifetime. The novel is immaculately researched and lovingly crafted. If people fall in love with our forgotten, fascinating, endangered relative, it will be because of Ape House." -- Vanessa Woods, author of Bonobo Handshake

"Sara Gruen knows things -- she knows them in her mind and in her heart. And, out of what she knows, she has created a true thriller that is addictive from its opening sentence. Devour it to find out what happens next, but also to learn remarkable and moving things about life on this planet. Very, very few novels can change the way you look at the world around you. This one does." -- Robert Goolrick, author of A Reliable Wife

"I had no idea that a menu written down by Mark Twain over a century ago could teach us so much about American food, but in the skillful hands of Andrew Beahrs, it does that and more. Twain's Feast is a brilliant book: elegant, insightful, and funny, part history and part hungry-making. It's not only an illuminating and relevant read, but a fun one."-- Molly Wizenberg, author of A Homemade Life.
"Long before the Slow Food movement, Mark Twain championed regional American cooking. In this beautifully written ode to Twain and local delicacies like possum, oysters and Philadelphia terrapin, Andrew Beahrs has given us an instant classic in the literature of the table." -- Andrew Todhunter, author of A Meal Observed. We're happy to annouce our first endorsement of Andrew Beahr's TWAIN'S FEAST, from Jane Smith, author of THE GARDEN OF INVENTION: Luther Burbank and the Business of Breeding Plants: "Twain's Feast takes us on an engaging, quixotic search for the lost regional specialties Mark Twain loved--and reminds us of how food always shapes our sense of where we come from and who we are. Whether gorging on barbecued raccoon, mourning the endangered terrapin, or whipping up a chess pie with his young son, Andrew Beahrs pays attention to the details that make meals memorable. Anyone who likes Twain, or cooking, or the bittersweet history of our changing landscape will savor this Feast." (March 8th, 2010)
